Accutech was
engaged by a firm of consulting engineers to develop a model
of a dewatering system. An area of land was to be open cut mined
and was to be dewatered by placing pumps in nine bore holes around
the location. The objectives of the design were:
- To determine
pump sizes (number of stages) and pipe size/type necessary to
discharge the estimated quantity of water.
- To view the
performance of the system over a period of time during which
the phreatic surface elevation would vary.
- To compare the
performance of different types of pipe - polyethylene, steel
etc.
- To investigate
any possible 'cascade' effect of one pump failing leading to
others operating outside recommended zones and tripping out.
Groundwater information
and surface levels were provided by the consulting engineers.
A model was developed including all nine pumps. A large number
of case studies were performed as the system was optimised towards
the best combination of pump size and pipe diameter. Predictions
of future performance of the system were made accounting for
falling groundwater levels.
