A model of an existing potline fume
extraction system at the Capral Alumina Smelter was developed
from a set of drawings and other information supplied by consultants
Advitech Pty Ltd. The objective of the study was to determine
if there were any bottlenecks in the system, and if so to advise
on remedial measures.
Accutech used the Piping Systems
FluidFlow software for this project.
The extraction system comprised
a combination of circular conduit and rectangular duct in both
steel and concrete. Four large fans evacuated the system to atmosphere
via a stack.
The majority of pipework junctions
were "non-standard", being site-fabricated. For instance
a rectangular duct joining a circular pipe at an angle of less
than 90 deg. Consequently, coefficients of head loss (K values)
for these junctions had to be determined individually and then
entered into the software database.
The model gave very similar results
to site measurements and indicated that there were no restrictions
in the system and that increased flows would come only from changes
to the fans.
