CONTROL VALVES

Our fluid flow design programs allow control valves (FCVs and PCVs) to be simulated based on Cv versus % open. It’s often difficult to select an appropriately sized valve when first analysing a model and an incorrect selection may lead to non-convergence of the model or the control valve being defaulted fully open.

We recommend that initially, instead of a control valve, an orifice plate be used. An appropriate size can be estimated, say a diameter ratio of 0.5, and the model solved. The size of the orifice can be adjusted until desired conditions are achieved. If the resulting diameter ratio is inappropriate, ie the orifice is very small, then perhaps a more efficient solution would be to reduce the size of the pipe locally to the proposed control valve. Once a satisfactory solution has been achieved using an orifice plate, the software will provide data for the specification of the control valve, viz: upstream and downstream pressures, pipe size and valve opening (approximately the orifice size) and fluid properties.

FluidFlow3 has an 'Auto" component for each of a PSV and PRV, where the pressure is set and the software will solve provided the pressure is achievable, without using any specific CV data.
